The climate year of Cannes
Until the 19th century Cannes (Latin Canna "reed") was a fishing village, until French aristocrats discovered the area and built their vacation homes there. Soon the city became known and popular among foreign rich nobles as well, and has remained a meeting place for the rich and beautiful to this day. The city is located in a bay on the Mediterranean Sea, the hinterland is formed by the foothills of the Maritime Alps ("Alpes Maritimes"), in the west stretches a cliff of red porphyry, the Esterel Mountains. The two islands of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat can be reached by ferry from Cannes. The Musée de la Mer and the prison of the Man with the Iron Mask are located on Sainte-Marguerite, while Île Saint-Honorat has been inhabited only by monks since the 5th century. The Cannes International Film Festival has been held every year since 1946.
