The climate year of Madeira
Madeira originated from a hot spot, so it is of volcanic origin. This is also reflected in the rugged landscape and steep coasts. The formation went through several phases over millions of years. The entire island has mountainous character, the highest elevation is Pico Ruivo with 1,862 meters. The climatic conditions of the island are interesting, as Madeira has different mesoclimates. The north is dominated by frequent rainfall, while the south is subtropical-dry. While in summer the northeast trade wind influences the weather, in winter the west wind dominates. The temperature differences between summer and winter are small, the humidity is almost constant all year round. Up to 10 rainy days in winter are contrasted by almost precipitation-free summer months. The different amounts of precipitation between north and south are compensated by irrigation systems, the levadas.
General information about Madeira
As a tourist, you usually arrive in Madeira at Funchal airport. More and more popular are cruises with destination Madeira or at least a stopover on the island. Ferry connections to Africa and the European mainland complete the offer. Madeira is advertised as a flower island, and the island's magnificent flora is also its main attraction. The botanical garden in Funchal should not be missing in the program of a tourist. Outside the gardens, if you explore the island with a rental car, you can always find impressive natural gardens. Even away from the flora, the island offers a wealth of sights. Besides the famous churches in Funchal, you can visit the natural swimming pools and the aquarium in Porto Moniz, admire the lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo, or marvel at Cabo Girao, the highest cliff on the island. Nature lovers will enjoy the high plateau of Paul da Serra and climbing Pico Ruivo. A highlight is also the basket sleigh ride in Monte Funchal, here you can also visit the grave of the last Austrian emperor. Also worth seeing are the typical Madeiran farmhouses, which can still be found everywhere on the island. Madeira also offers culinary delights. In addition to the famous wine, the famous black scabbard fish, typically Madeiran with bananas, should be at least once on the menu of every island tourist.
Tourism Madeira
The low temperature fluctuations offer almost constant weather all year round. The temperature increases only slightly from January to May, but the rainy days decrease continuously in spring. In June, the maximum temperature is already approaching its maximum, and the number of rainy days drops well below ten. Between July and September, the highest temperatures prevail on the island, but the frequency of rainfall increases again significantly in September. A pure bathing and beach vacation will therefore be planned in the months with the least rainfall, July or August. October brings again lower, but not unpleasant temperatures, until December still a little drop, the number of rainy days then reaches the maximum in December. It should be noted that the north is significantly rainier than the south, especially outside the summer season, you should pay attention when planning your vacation.
