The climate year of Wellington

It is never really hot or extremely cold in Wellington. The temperatures in winter as well as in summer differ only slightly from each other, but due to the prevailing westerly winds it can be quite windy. The so called "Roaring Forties" provide for frequent strong winds and rather unstable weather. Severe storms are nevertheless rare and usually occur only in New Zealand's autumn or winter. It should be noted that the seasons in New Zealand are opposite to those in Europe - if it is summer here, it is winter there and vice versa. Nevertheless, the "Windy City" offers an extremely varied vacation program, which is not possible in many cities in the world. In Wellington, for example, it is not uncommon to lie on the beach in the morning and enjoy a swim in the Pacific Ocean - and then shoulder your skis in the afternoon for a short trip to the slopes. The most beautiful slopes are already within a two-hour drive of Wellington.

General information about Wellington

In the language of the Maori Wellington is also called "Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui", which means as much as "The head of Maui's fish". The fish is usually used to refer to the North Island in Maori mythology, and Maui is a legendary demigod, roughly comparable to the Greek Heracles. Indeed, Wellington, as the cultural and economic center, is the head of the island. But not only culturally the city is interesting, also fans of the film series "The Lord of the Rings" come here at their expense. Along the Hobbit's Hideaway, a hiking trail, lie many locations known from the films.

Tourism Wellington

Wellington is in the temperate climate zone, which means it doesn't get really cold in the winter or really hot in the summer. In the New Zealand winter, which takes place in the months of July and August, the average temperature is about 11 °C. During this time it rains about 14 days per month and the sun shines from the sky about four hours a day. In January and February, when it is summer in New Zealand, the average temperature is 21 °C. The sun shines about eight hours a day, and it rains about seven days a month. However, if you want to take a dip in the Pacific Ocean, you shouldn't be too squeamish. Due to the constant wind, the swell is usually considerable, and the water does not get warmer than 18 °C even in summer. However, the conditions are perfect for surfers - especially in the months of October to March. Skiing, on the other hand, is best in July and August.
