The climate year of Thassos

The island of about 400 square kilometers belongs to the region of Macedonia and is about seven kilometers away from the mainland. The rather continental climate of the mainland meets here the Mediterranean climate of the Aegean Sea, which has led among other things to two slightly different vegetative zones: the north around the capital Limenas with a rather sub-Mediterranean vegetation and the south around the port city Limenaria with a rather mesomediterranean vegetation. Three large mountain ranges characterize the inland and not least their numerous springs create an unusually good irrigation situation for the Aegean, which has earned the island the nickname "green island". Due to the windward-leeward effect, the somewhat wetter region is found more on the east coast. Seen over the whole island, this special constellation leads to a climate with few extremes, neither in one direction nor in the other.

General information about Thassos

Thassos can be reached only by ferry, best from Kavala, so you can hardly make out any phenomena of mass tourism here. The island offers its visitors, in addition to the charming landscape, a number of very different sights and leisure activities. These include numerous hiking trails, but also canoe tours, for example, through the famous Nestos Gorge in one of the largest Greek nature reserves. A large variety of outstanding beaches with such meaningful names as Paradise beach offer recreation, but also water sports. The main attractions include the capital Limenas, famous for its marble, with an old town worth seeing, an ancient theater and the Museum of Archaeology and Folklore. Also worth a visit are the temples of Alyki in the south of the island with their ancient marble quarries or the dragon cave in Panagia as well as the monastery in honor of the Archangel Michael.

Tourism Thassos

Thassos generally has a typical Mediterranean climate, but due to its particular location and geological makeup, it has some special features. The winter months from about October to March are characterized by more frequent rainy days, up to twelve in a month. Temperatures during this period vary between three and 20°C. In the spring and especially summer months from April to September it can be quite hot, namely up to 33°C, more rarely up to 40°C, but there are also always short cooling by rainy days or the typical Meltemi winds. The season here usually lasts from April to October. The water temperature then averages 20°C, but bathing in winter with a water temperature of at least 12°C is also becoming increasingly popular.
