Climate Canaries

The Canaries or Canary Islands are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, which attracts many tourists throughout the year due to its balanced climate. Therefore, it is also called "Island of eternal spring".

The climate year of Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are only a few kilometers away from the coast Africa. The islands lie on the same latitude as the Sahara, Kuwait and Florida and consist of seven main islands, six secondary islands and three uninhabited rocky islands. The highest mountain Spain is located on Tenerife with 3,718 meters and is called Pico del Teide. Tenerife, like the other islands, is of volcanic origin and the largest of the archipelago. Mountain ranges divide the island into a desert-like landscape in the south and a lush green landscape with deep valleys, the so-called "barrancos", in the north. The smaller neighboring island La Gomera is ideal for hiking enthusiasts and Lanzarote still shows very clearly its evolutionary history, as little vegetation and many volcanic mountains predominate on the island. Gran Canaria is known for its mini-desert - a sea of sand - in Maspalomas, the island La Palma for hikers and individualists and lastly, the smallest of the seven islands with tourism, El Hierro. It spoils the visitor with a fascinating nature with forest, mountains and plateau.

General information about Canary Islands

Each of the Canary Islands has its own attractions and flair. La Palma has been a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve since 2002 and the island practices gentle, sustainable tourism. Instead of bed castles, tourists will find country houses, vacation homes and apartments. El Hierro also belongs to the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and inspires the visitor with its fabulous nature and the views from the cliffs. The landmark of the island of Gran Canaria is the lighthouse of Maspalomas on the south side of Gran Canaria and quite hidden is the village of Arucas, near the capital Las Palmas, where in the past the Canarian rum was produced. In the village of Arucas still stands the Hacienda del Buen Suceso, where once lived the owners of plantations of bananas and sugar cane.

Tourism Canary Islands

The Canary Islands have a subtropical climate with average temperatures of 19°C in winter and 25°C in summer, and therefore only 6°C temperature variations on average. This is a very healthy and pleasant climate and therefore attracts many tourists especially in winter. The Gulf Stream or Canary Current balances the temperatures and trade winds ensure that the hot air currents from Africa stay away. When easterly winds blow, however, "Calima" brings warm air and Saharan sand to the islands. The islands with mountains are usually divided into two zones, one humid, cool with high mountain climate and the other dry, hot with desert zone. In the canyons (barrancos), each has its own microclimate with a variety of plants and animals. On the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the climate is dry all year round.
