The Balearic Islands, dearly loved by Germans, are a Spanish archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea with a typical Mediterranean climate. In summer it gets hot, in winter there is a mild climate with a lot of rain.

The climate year of Balearic Islands

Four islands of the Balearic Islands are inhabited, the rest are too small to live on. Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera are only a few hours away by plane, have beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. Thousands of visitors a year enjoy the mild climate in spring. Average high temperatures in July and August are 28 degrees on the coast, although in the interior of the islands it can exceed 40 degrees on some days. Summer is dominated by the Azores highs, and autumn and winter by the westerly winds that bring a lot of rain (winter rain climate). With an average of six to seven degrees at night and 14 to 15 degrees during the day, it is coldest from December to February and sub-zero temperatures are not uncommon at night.

General information about Balearic Islands

Only 90 km from the mainland is Ibiza, which in recent years has acquired a reputation as a party island. Since 1999, the city wall of Dalt Vila has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it Ibiza's most important structure. Formentera, the second smallest island of the Balearic Islands, is very flat and is characterized by rocks. In the past, hippies and free-thinkers lived here, but today mainly vacationers who love peace and quiet and families with children come here. On Menorca, the vacationer can discover interesting places, for example, the cave world, the taulas, which are huge stone tables, or tombs and the Basilica de Son Bous. In the capital Mao there is the second largest natural harbor in the world, the old city wall and numerous museums.

Tourism Balearic Islands

In Mallorca, spring begins at the end of December, when the first plants bloom. For many vacationers, January and February with the almond blossom are the most beautiful months of the year. However, the main season for Mallorca takes place in July and August. Then it is warmest and the high temperatures are often accompanied by very heavy rains that cause flooding. The mildest average climate is in Ibiza, with 30 degrees in summer and still 15 to 20 degrees in winter. Formentera can boast an even warmer climate, only rarely do temperatures reach the 10 degree mark in winter and it rains less than on Ibiza. Between May and September Formentera has the most vacationers, among long-term vacationers and residents the winters are very popular, others prefer the dry, hot summer. Compared to Mallorca, the sister island of Menorca offers a somewhat milder climate, with mild temperatures and shallow winds in the summer, but in the winter the Tramuntana (north wind) provides a harsh climate with strong winds. In Menorca, the most pleasant months are May, June and September with temperatures between 25 and 30 grand.
